Preparing for a Hurricane

at | Category: Hurricane Preperation

The following is a short list of things you will need when evacuating the path of a hurricane:

Water. At least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days

Food.  It is suggested that you have at least enough for 3 to 7 days non-perishable pre-packaged or can food. Don’t forget to have a non electric can opener handy, and disposable utensils.

Blankets and Pillows.

Clothing. Carrying as much clothing as you can, I would suggest at least seven changes and extra socks and shoes.

First Aid Kit, prescription, and non prescription medications.

Toiletries, and personal hygiene items.

Flashlight with extra batteries.

Radio. Battery operated, or hand crank.

Telephones. Make sure cell phones are fully charged, and carry and extra battery if possible. Don’t forget your chargers, and get a car charger if you don’t have one.

Cash and Credit Cards. It is important because loss of power for an extended period could make banks and ATMs may not be available for an unknown duration.

Toys, Books and Games. Important to keep you occupied while damage repairs are underway.

Important documents. Place them in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag. Things you would want to carry are: Insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.

Fill up your gas tanks. Again power outages can prevent you from being able to get gas.

Pet care items. Make sure to carry an ample supply of food and water, a carrier or cage, and leash.

Engage protective shutters, or use plywood to cover glass openings.
