Refinishing Cabinets in Wilmington NC

One easy and economical way to give a room a new look is painting cabinets. Replacing cabinets isn’t always in the budget, besides most times they are still in very good shape, and all that is needed to get a completely new look is a few coats of paint and some TLC. Depending on what coating is present the surface preparation will vary from a lot of prep work to a simple scuff sanding.

These cabinets I refinished this week had two layers of paint. The original was oil enamel, which is very durable and long lasting. Unfortunately someone had painted directly over that with a cheap latex semi gloss. No primer was used. This meant there were serious adhesion problems, and you could scratch it off with your fingernail.  The latex had to go. I used a gel stripper to soften and scrape and wire brush it away. After a wipe down with mineral spirits to neutralize the stripper, we then sanded them down with 180 sandpaper.

I chose Benjamin Moore Advance acrylic oil hybrid enamel for the finish after hearing many good things about the product from other painting contractors. This is a fairly new product to the market, and I was happy to see it perform like I have come to expect a Ben Moore product. I decided to brush the primer, mainly as a test to evaluate the handling and leveling of the primer. Primer applied very easily with a brush, and level like a champ. There is an eight hour cure time recommended, so the next day I sanded with 220 grit sandpaper. The finish was outstanding and again leveled nicely. After and eight hour cure the doors and drawers look fantastic, and the finish was nice and hard, showing a beautiful light sheen.  This finish will offer my client many years of beauty and durability.

Great post Tommy – and the cabinets look sharp! Of course you just know black is my favorite colour ;)

You should post a finished shot of the kitchen – I bet it looks sweet!

    Cheers,
    Alec

I would Alec, but forgot to get finished shots. This was from two bathroom vanities. Nothing to big.

Those pro shots you posted on FB look amazing. Hard to believe those are site finished cabinets. Amazing work.
