How To Find The Best Wilmington Handyman For You

The question you might be asking is, “How do I find and hire a decent Wilmington handyman?” One thing we all share as homeowners is a universal necessity for repairs from time to time. However, we do not all share the set of skills needed to carry out those repairs. Many of us require the know-how and experience of a skilled worker to fix or replace something in our homes. That, or we simply do not have time to address the problems ourselves.
Ask amongst neighbors, friends, and family.
Just about everyone has had to have work done to his or her home by some fix-it type. These types of repairmen are plentiful, but you will want to choose someone to help you who has the resume of good service to back up his word. If want to be extra careful, ask the service man himself for some references of past jobs he has done.
visit your local hardware store
Another way to go about finding someone who specializes in the repair job you need is to visit your local hardware store. Most of these businesses will have a bulletin board and plenty of business cards for a local Wilmington handyman. This is also an excellent place to ask around in case you do not see any listing for a specific type of work. Ask the clerks of any servicemen they can personally recommend.
search the classifieds section of the newspaper
A third option for locating a specialized day trader is searching the classifieds section of the newspaper. There are also many sites on the internet dedicated for providing information and rating for all types of contractors depending on local areas.
give them a call
Once you have found someone who seems likely to be able to help, give them a call. Be sure and describe your problem in detail and ask about everything from hourly pay rates, scheduling, and availability. Be sure to clear up anything that is not clear about a job you may be curious about.
Effective communication is a must until the job is through.
If possible, get a written estimate of the cost of the labor that will be done. If you are ever unsure of whom to hire when seeking repair services, it is a wise idea to not simply choose the cheapest bid.
Locating the right Wilmington handyman for a specific job may take a little detective work, but it will be worth the search, as it will guarantee a quality job. Check the various popular sources for specified Wilmington handyman hires and the right worker will be found. Be sure to take the precautions and always communicate clearly before hiring someone for a job, as it may save you a considerable about of money and a headache.

Durham Door Refinishing with Minwax Oil Modified Polyurethane
This week I used Minwax oil modified poly for the first time. I refinished a mahogany door on a Durham home, stripping the old failing finish first with a chemical stripper, sanding and then applying a penetrating stain. This is fairly new technology and is supposed to offer the benefits of both waterborne and oil based products.
Application was similar to acrylic waterborne poly. Very thin, dries very fast and can be recoated within hours. As I first started applying I noticed that instead of applying smoothly over the surface the poly has a tendency to bead up. Anyone who has applied waterborne poly has seen this in the past at least once. A second or third pass with your brush was needed to get a smooth even application. Below is a picture showing this “beading” effect. This is a big time waster and production killer, which for a Durham professional contractor is something we just cannot have.

The great and bad characteristics about waterborne, and in this case oil modified waterborne, is dry time. Great that you can sand and recoat in a very short period of time, yet bad because it is much harder to work with and achieve a smooth even finish because you have so little time to work the finish.
This product dried and sanded to a powder on these brush coats in about an hour.

After applying a few brush coats to build a film that would sand smooth I removed the door and sprayed two coats with a 311 tip. Again beading was an issue, and I had to apply much more product than I was comfortable with per coat to get the finish to lie down and play nice.

Seven brushed coats were applied to the trim, and side lights. The door received two brushed coats and two sprayed coats. The outcome was great, however I feel like I had to work too hard to achieve the finish I wanted and was pleased with. As a professional Durham contractor I would not suggest a homeowner use this product for an application like this. This product is just too difficult to work with, and painting as fast as I can I could barely stay ahead of the set up of the finish. Also having to go back into the product after it is applied to get the finish to lie down is unacceptable.
The results however were outstanding, and my client was very pleased with the door refinishing service.
